How to Measure Your Dog's Neck for a Collar

A well-fitted collar is essential for your dog's comfort and safety. Follow these simple steps to measure your dog's neck accurately and ensure the best fit for our handcrafted collars.

What You'll Need:

  • A soft measuring tape or a piece of string and a ruler.
  • Your dog!

Steps:

  1. Find the Right Spot:
    • Place the measuring tape around your dog’s neck where the collar would naturally sit. This is usually at the base of the neck, near the shoulders.
    • Make sure the tape sits snugly against the neck, without leaving extra space. Avoid adding two-finger spacing to this measurement, as our collars are made to fit securely based on the exact neck size.

  2. Measure Precisely:
    • Hold the tape so it fits snug but not tight—be sure not to pull it too tightly against your dog's neck. You want to record the true neck size.
    • If you’re using a piece of string, wrap it around the neck and mark where it overlaps, then measure the string with a ruler.

  3. Consider Coat Thickness:
    • If your dog has a thick coat, account for that when measuring, as collars can fit tighter on fluffy dogs.

  4. Check the Collar Width:
    • Selecting the right width is also important. We offer four different widths for our collars, and here’s how to choose based on your dog's size and breed:

    • 16mm Width
Not recommended for dogs over 8kg. Suitable for: Toy breeds and small dogs up to 8kg, such as Fox terrier, miniature poodle, small Jack Russell terriers
    • 19mm Width
Suitable for: Small to medium dogs such as Frenchies, Shih Tzus, Cavoodles and Cocker Spaniels.
    • 25mm Width
Suitable for: Medium to large dogs like Beagles, Border Collies, Labradors, German pointers and Staffordshire Bull Terriers.
    • 38mm Width
      Extra-wide collar.
Suitable for: Larger dogs with sturdy necks, such as German Shepherds, Pitbulls and Rottweilers. Keep in mind that this width is wider than standard collars, so make sure it's comfortable for your dog. 38mm collars are also suitable for sighthound breeds.
